Christian Arming

Christian Arming is one of Austria's most sought-after conductors and is very successful in both the symphonic and operatic fields. From 2011 to 2019, he was Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège. He previously held the same position with the New Japan Philharmonic and the Lucerne Theatre and Symphony Orchestra and was chief conductor of the Janáček Philharmonic. After being its Principal Guest Conductor since 2017, Christian Arming has been Music Director of the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra since April 2024.

Since conducting the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra at the Prague Spring Festival in 2003, he has conducted top European orchestras, including the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the RSO Frankfurt, the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg, the Wiener Symphoniker, the Polish National Radio and the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre national de Belgique, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the RAI-Orchestra Turin, the Orchestre national du Capitole in Toulouse. In North America he conducted the symphony orchestras in Boston, Cincinnati, Houston, Colorado, Utah und Vancouver, in Asien the symphony orchestras of the NHK, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Shanghai as well as the Taïwan and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.

Christian Arming made his operatic debut in 1997 at the Salzburg Festival and has since conducted The Turn of the Screw in Cincinnati, Der Rosenkavalier in Trieste, La Boheme in Lucerne, Salome and Elektra in Verona, Prince Igor in Strasbourg, Der fliegende Holländer, Don Giovanni, Jenufa, Les Contes d'Hoffmann and Der Zwerg at Oper Frankfurt, Pelléas uet Mélisande, Leonore, Gianni Schicchi, Salome, Eine florentinische Tragödie, Lohengrin and Die Fledermaus in Tokyo. In 2019, he conducted four performances of Carmen at the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy, sharing the podium with Seiji Ozawa. To open the 2024/25 season, he conducts a production of Cosi fan tutte in Tokyo and Hiroshima.

Christian Arming has a wide discography (he has made more than 20 CD-recordings) that includes works by Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Janáček and many more. In 2018, Deutsche Grammophon released a recording with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège and the Sirba Octet.

Christian Arming was born in Vienna and studied conducting with Leopold Hager at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Seiji Ozawa was also a mentor and strong supporter of his career, taking him to Boston and Tokyo.
